AND in Class answer the following

Understanding Neurobiology through the Study of Addiction: Unit Assessment
Robert has been arrested several times for drug possession. After the first arrest, he was given probation. After the second and third arrests, he was sentenced to jail for one year each time. The police arrested him a fourth time, but instead of having Robert serve more time in jail, the judge ordered him to enter a drug treatment program.
Use the information from the whole unit to prepare a position statement (reasons for the decision) that the judge might produce to support her decision to have Robert undergo drug treatment instead of going to jail.
The position statement should provide background scientific information on drug addiction and its effects, and give logical reasons to support the decision.
In addition, include a final paragraph, explaining whether you agree or disagree with the judge’s decision
You will be given 30 minutes to write this in class (25 points)

OR (Teachers decision)

New York Times, March 25 2009 – “Gov. David A. Paterson and New York legislative leaders have reached an agreement to dismantle much of what remains of the state’s strict 1970s-era drug laws, once among the toughest in the nation.”
These laws are often called the ‘Rock Drug Laws’ after Henry Rockefeller who championed the laws in 1973 in response to a sharp increase in heroin use and crime amongst young children.
The proposed legislation includes a reduction of mandatory minimum sentences, and it includes a restoration of judges’ authority to send many drug offenders to treatment programs instead of jail.
Your Task:
Select the Role you would like to play. You can be either….

1. Member of an action group that opposes the repeal of the 'Rock Drug Laws'
OR
2. Member of the congressional panel writing the new legislation

Use any relevant information we cover in the unit to produce a position statement for the role you are playing.
Your position statement should contain the physiological, psychological and philosophical reasons for your position and will be graded using the attached Rubric.
